An invitation from The Society of Friends of Dunblane Cathedral

We have in Dunblane one of Scotland’s fi nest church buildings, which brings many visitors to the town.

The Cathedral and its surroundings provide us all with a pleasant and peaceful area for rest and recreation. The Society of Friends of Dunblane Cathedral works with Historic Scotland and the Kirk Session to maintain and improve the building.

However, the objects of the Society extend beyond the actual Cathedral building itself. The surroundings of the Cathedral, which provide it with an appropriate setting, might have been very diff erent had it not been for the foresight of the Society during its fi rst twenty years. The properties which now form Old Churches House might have been replaced by something much less appropriate if the Society, shortly after it was founded in 1930, had not purchased what were a number of dilapidated houses in Kirk Street.

In 1959, after overcoming opposition from the Town Council, the Society donated the houses to the founders of the original Scottish Churches’ House. When Churches’ House closed as an Ecumenical centre in 2011 the Society lobbied actively and successfully to ensure that the new users preserved the sympathetic appearance of the buildings.
