NATO Joint Force Command Brunssum in the Netherlands FOR OUR CHOSEN CHARITY BACK HOME By Camilla Davies T 48

hroughout the past twelve months, the UK community of NATO Joint Force Command Brunssum have

been raising funds for charity with other national delegations. Our efforts are for our chosen charity back home.

An International Christmas Fair and the themed Charity Night ‘Back to the 80’s’ were two of the biggest fundraisers. All events showed the immense spirit of the UK community and a huge amount of hard work went into preparing and supporting the events and ultimately, raising lots of money.

At the beginning of June, the UK delegation hosted the final International Club coffee morning with a Mad Hatter’s tea party where the total funds raised throughout the year was announced. Each Nation’s charity received a staggering 3,700 euros each and Camilla

Envoy Summer 2014

Davies, UK Charity Representative, received the cheque, on behalf of ‘Once We Were Soldiers’, the UK’s chosen charity.

Founder and Chairman of the charity, Andrew Spiers wrote in thanks:

“Once We Were Soldiers would like to thank you for nominating us as one of the beneficiaries for your fundraisers during 2013. The funds raised will be a tremendous help to Once We Were Soldiers. We are still a small charity with very little funding but our client list is growing daily. Without the support of people like you we would find it difficult to fulfil our aims.

“Our aim, with your help, is to provide much needed support to our homeless veterans. Statistics show that at least 10% of the UK homeless population is made up of ex- forces personnel and the number of military

personnel suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other mental health problems are rising rapidly.

“Through no fault of their own, too many of these veterans find themselves homeless with no hope and no support. They may turn to drugs, alcohol or both just to help get them through the day or block out the horrors of the constant flashbacks.

“Once We Were Soldiers helps by providing much needed support, shelter, food and clothing. The ultimate goal of the charity is to prevent homelessness of ex-service personnel by opening fully functional transition centres in and around the UK. The transition centres will provide training and support for those who are about to embark on their journey of resettlement into civilian life. They will operate as a stop gap between the military and civvy street. Together we can make a difference.”
