Nikki Scott started Scotty’s Little Soldiers, the charity for service children after losing her husband while he was serving in Afghanistan. With two young children, Kai, now ten and Brooke, now five, Nikki, understood the pressures of raising young children after such a tragedy and wanted to find a way to put a smile back on the children’s faces.

Bringing back the

S

cotty’s launched in Aug 10 and provides gifts, activities and vouchers for children who’ve lost a mum or dad serving in the

Armed Forces, as well as enabling them to use the charity’s holiday lodges in Blackpool, Great Yarmouth and Devon.

More than 140 children are now members of Scotty’s and the mums and dads say finding Scotty’s Little Soldiers has been very positive for them in helping to process their family’s bereavement.

Abby Cornish, 36, lost her husband Matthew in Iraq in 2006, one week before he was due to fly home from his third tour and just before their fifth wedding anniversary.

She says Scotty’s has been a huge help to their two children Ethan, now 11 and Libby, now nine, as they’ve met other members and made friends at events like ‘Scotty’s Christmas Party’ held at Alton Towers last year.

“Scotty’s understands everything and the

children love being involved. It’s helped them so much,” said Abby.

Children who are members of Scotty’s receive their own mail and the charity organises treats for them at key times of the year such as birthdays, anniversaries, and Christmas.

Amy Lawrence’s husband Philip was killed when a remotely donated bomb hit his vehicle in Afghanistan. She raises daughter Jessica, five, alone at their home in Norfolk.
