rom the Middle East nding, it’s rewarding
901 EAW Detachment Commander and former HS125 pilot, Squadron Leader Claire Burgener “For me it’s satisfying when my personnel are as well supported as they can be and we get aircraft away on important tasks on time and kitted out. Launching last minute compassionate tasks to get someone home as quickly as possible and seeing the passengers through to the airport is very rewarding.
“I like the sheer variety of the job. I’m involved in everything, it’s a mini Station. It’s a small detachment and I’m hands on in helping people. I’m quite proud to be part of a detachment that’s been involved here for a long time. It’s a long standing relationship, over 70 years. It’s ticking over nicely. I have been coming out here on aircraft for the last six years. Here is an opportunity to build on that experience. Useful to transfer the knowledge in my new role as the squadron boss.”
SAC Anthony Muller from Personnel Support Flight “The most satisfying aspect is getting people back home at the end of their tour. The difference I’ve made is cutting out the “faff” of the arrivals process and trying to cut down on the paperwork. My replacement will only have to click a few buttons and it saves a lot of time. The more I set up the easier it will be.”
Corporal Sanjaya Gurung, Royal Logistic Corps “I handle 100 bags of mail a week on average, often for 4 or 5 ships in the region. My biggest challenge is time, since I’m the only postie here, but it’s satisfying to see how people really appreciate me once they receive their mail!”
Corporal Christopher Wilkinson, from Mechanical Transport Operations “I am a massive fan of my trade. It’s the best in the Air Force. I’m a big believer in road safety, for me to be in this role and educate people is very rewarding. The MT trade covers everything in the RAF. One day I’ll be refuelling an aircraft and the next day taking a truck to Scotland. You can’t get a better trade but I do miss home.”
Senior Aircraftman (Technician) Paul Thulborn who works in the Communications Centre “I like helping the aircrews by looking after all their crypto material and making sure we can give them a quick turnaround. We take in the signals including Navy traffic, we issue mobile phones for personnel security and cascade messages to them. If
comms go down we use a dial up terminal to keep everything going.
Everyone knows everyone else here, it is the best detachment I have ever been on.”
