calendar for 2015. The project was put together to raise money and awareness for the good works of the Royal Air Forces Association. It is hoped 5,000 calendars will be sold nationwide.

The ladies' inspiration for the calendar’s theme is the strength and dedication of the women of who during WWII kept this country going in the absence of the men fighting away from home for the country’s freedom. These women took on many jobs previously seen as solely ‘mens’ work including farming, car maintenance and even work in the war rooms.

It was over eighteen months ago at RAF Brize Norton that a small group of women met to discuss how they could raise money for RAFA and the idea of creating a calendar was born. A committee was formed and the RAFA Calendar Girls were on their way with ten women ready to take it forward.

A chance meeting in a local supermarket secured their first volunteer photographer.

The RAFA Calendar Girls committee had no experience in photography, vintage fashion or 1940’s re-enactment. But after much research the team has done its utmost to remain true to the period and produce vintage style pictures depicting the lives of the women. The project was run throughout on passion and determination.

Online requests for assistance and volunteers produced everything from models, to make-up artists and hairdressers, to dressmakers and photographers. The response was amazing. Following a fun and successful hair and make- up practice day the Committee began planning the first of 13 photo shoots.

Completion in May this year brings to a close the creative stage and the calendars are now available to purchase: www.rafacalendargirls.org.uk
