RAF Families Federation QUICK 6 SURVEY RESULTS

Colin Jones of the RAF FF Evidence Team H

ere we feed back to you the results of two Quick Six Surveys we have run over the last couple of months.

Firstly, thank you to everyone who took the time to take part. The importance of your engagement with us through survey work cannot be overstated. We cannot tell the RAF and MoD what you are concerned about if you don’t tell us!

Our first theme looked at access to financial credit. We sought to quantify the extent of the problem(s) and to produce some facts for discussion rather than just reporting that ‘we know it’s an issue…’ On this occasion, we provided your evidence to the MoD and it was included in a ministerial submission outlining the problems you encountered. As a result, further work is now underway with the financial sector as part of the Armed Forces Covenant intent to remove disadvantage caused by Service life.

With the results we also include below a small selection of the hundreds of comments we received.

OBTAINING CREDIT

AND SOME OF YOUR COMMENTS “Frequent move of address for Service reasons has adversely affected my credit score which meant my initial application was rejected. It took 4 months of phone calls and letters, which culminated in me writing to the CEO of the bank claiming discrimination against me as a member of HM Forces before my case was dealt with to my satisfaction. I received an apology and compensation and the bank said they would look at amending their policy for Service personnel because of my experience; however, they could not promise that it would lead to any changes as my situation was deemed 'unusual'.”

“I had been serving accompanied in the USA for 3 years and wanted the John Lewis card for when we bought new appliances when we got back to the UK. I was refused. This was most embarrassing and frustrating. This is not solely an issue of for the junior ranks; I was a squadron leader at the time.”

“I had difficulty getting a mobile phone contract on returning from Cyprus whilst my unemployed wife had no problem.”

“Because a previous SFA occupant has left lots of debt we are being blamed for it.”

“We moved from overseas and it took threatening to tell the entire 24 Envoy Summer 2014 www.raf-ff.org.uk
