NEWS IN BRIEF Home Grown Business Secures Big Funding
£9.4M LEISURE CENTRE PLANS UNVEILED BY ALLERDALE COUNCIL
Allerdale Council has revealed images for Workington’s new £9.4m leisure centre in Cumbria. If given the go ahead, the centre will include a variety of facilities including a 25m eight-lane swimming pool with spectator seating and spa facilities including a sauna, steamroom and spa pool. Private investment is now being sought to fund the building of the complex following a public consultation last year. The new centre will replace Workington’s swimming pool and sports centre at Moorclose which were built in the 1970s and have become operationally and environmentally inefficient.
£31M REDCAR LEISURE CENTRE OPENS
Leisure operator Everyone Active has opened the doors to Redcar & Cleveland Leisure and Community Heart following a £31m investment.
The project, designed by S & P Architects, started life back in October 2011 and was officially launched in the north east seaside town on 26 April.
The development, in the heart of the town centre, will provide a focal point and much needed facility for local communities and visitors.
As well as a business centre, multi-functional meeting and community spaces and a leisure centre, the project features aquatic equipment including a six-lane 25m competition swimming pool, a ‘beach- style’ pool, a 11m by 7m learner pool with a moveable floor and a FlowRider surf simulator. A sauna and steamroom are also included.

Cornish hot tub manufacturing and spa parts company, Isell Ltd, have recently secured Business Growth funding from the Businesses Investment for Growth (BIG) scheme, which is managed by Cornwall Development Company and funded by the European Regional Development Fund Convergence Programme. What’s really exciting is that two of the main elements of Isell Ltd, Splash-Tec and Hydrospares, are growing so rapidly that this expansion has become a necessary part of their business
development.
Isell Ltd was originally set up in 2005 by brother and sister team John and Rosie Ellis, and their entrepreneurial qualities have complemented each other perfectly. With relocation to larger premises, taking on two adjacent units, the business has separated its manufacturing operation from the distribution. Splash-Tec will become one of the only companies in the UK who manufactures spas specifically for Super Yachts. On the distribution side,
Hydrospares is growing rapidly, and specialist warehouse equipment, such as packing benches, high bay pallet racking, picking trolleys and trays have been purchased, enabling the pick, pack and despatch process to work efficiently to keep up with daily order volumes. A crucial investment has been the installation of a new IT network in their offices and warehouse that includes a dedicated server to streamline systems and safeguard data. Improved despatch handling will allow them to increase their parcel output dramatically. The bigger warehouse for the Hydrospares distribution side, with improved stock handling, better order processing and despatch has already lead to further job creations.
