POOL SAFETY SYSTEMS

be too young to even formulate that kind of thought.”

Robert Lupton, President of Life Saver in the USA puts it like this: “Whilst it is impossible to guard against every eventuality, a sensible attitude to pool safety is essential to prevent drownings. There should be as many layers of security as is possible. The principal deterrent should be a passive barrier around the pool, which physically prevents access to small children. This can be assisted by a final layer of security – a pool alarm in the water, which will alert you should your child manage to get to the water. Further options are door alarms on the doors leading to the pool from the house which will alert you to a child going into the garden unauthorised.

“Whilst an enclosure or an electric pool cover may, at first thought, appear to be good safety options you have to ask yourself how you will use them. Will you close them if you go indoors to use the lavatory, answer the telephone or door, or prepare lunch? The answer generally is no.

“The reality is that pool builders tend not to talk about safety. Let’s face it, if they frighten the client from the beginning they may choose a tennis court instead. However there is no reason that they should not bring this up once the client has committed to a pool. They will not be thanked if there is an incident and a child drowns.

“The benefit of a removable fence is that you can take it down when not required. If you are having a party for example or if the winter cover is protecting the pool through the winter season, you may prefer to keep the pool clear except when children are visiting, this is often the case for grandparents for example.”

and go right up to the elderly, it can even protect family pets. The device, which is designed in the shape of a turtle is secured to the child’s wrist using a wrist strap and a special locking key. The Base station is then positioned within the house/villa or with a battery pack taken outside the confines of the property i.e. boating, to a hotel pool or walking by rivers. Once the Turtle enters the water it sends a wireless signal to the Base Station and sets the Base Station into alarm mode alerting people to a potential drowning incident. The Safety Turtle is not limited to the amount of Turtles to one Base Station as long as they are all the same colour. What makes the Safety Turtle so unique is you can add to the system, a pool gate alarm, a panic button, back gate alarm, they even to an adult’s overboard alarm (Safety Turtle SOS).

ANTI-DROWNING SYSTEM FROM ANGEL EYE

In a commercial environment, to protect swimmers, qualified personnel monitor the pools through the use of lifeguards, however this activity can become difficult as the bottom of the pool is difficult to see due to reflected light and the movement of water. Also swimmers on the surface of the water do not always permit a full view of the activities at the bottom of the pool. Distraction can also be a factor.

AngelEye is a safety system specifically designed to control the activity of swimmers. The system can evaluate dangerous situations and let the lifeguards know that there is an unsafe situation in progress.

The AngelEye drowning detection system studies the behaviour of the swimmers, immediately identifying dangerous situations. The video cameras in the water probe the pool and capture images that are analysed in real time by the AngelEye software. In the event of a drowning danger the AngelEye system activates a vibrating acoustic signal on the handheld device of the lifeguards, thus allowing immediate intervention.
