NEWS IN BRIEF Wigan Gets Laminates For Life

£19M EVERYONE ACTIVE ACTON CENTRE COMPLETED Ealing Council’s £19m redevelopment of Acton Town Hall in west London is complete, with the new leisure centre now open following 22 months of construction. The comprehensive redesign resulted in the addition of an eight-lane 25m swimming pool, 12m training pool with movable floor and other facilities. To celebrate the

completion, a free open day for the local community was held. Hosted by Olympic swimmer and sports presenter Steve Parry, it also featured a number of team GB swimmers.

CRESTA TAKE THE PLUNGE WITH MOBILE TECHNOLOGY Dorchester swimming pool, spas and hot tub company Cresta Leisure have recently benefitted from a fully funded support service from Superfast Business. Engineers have now started using tablets to help them work when they are servicing and installing pools and hot tubs. Director Simon Bareham said he couldn’t believe it was a free service. “I thought: ‘Where’s the catch?’ – I always think if you’re offering me something it’s going to cost me, but it was free.

“They pulled me away from the daily grind and made me assess the IT from outside the box rather than inside. It starts to open your mind up to technology and making information available to the engineers from the office. “We put all the information onto the cloud and we can access it. It speeds up our process so the engineer can instantly send back a photo of damage that needs repairing. “It’s been so good to have that expertise helping us to do this.”

Abet Laminati’s compact grade laminates are colouring The Healthy Living Zone which forms part of the Wigan Life Centre. The facility uses a combination of compact grade laminates from the Colours and Legni woodgrain ranges. The mix of different hues of blues, greens and black and white, together with the woodgrains have created bright, colourful and dramatic cubicles, lockers, benches and vanity units, all fabricated by specialist manufacturer TBS. Abet Laminati’s High Pressure Laminates are a popular choice for this type of heavy duty application and are commonly specified for lockers, table tops, vanity units and cubicles. Their finish provides a tactile,

hardwearing and attractive surface coupled with excellent resistance to impact, scratches and abrasion.

The compact grade’s solid core construction in 6mm, 10mm or 12mm thickness makes it a perfect choice for areas prone to high moisture and humidity, such as leisure centres, swimming pools and changing rooms, because there is no risk of peeling, cracking or delamination. The fully self- supporting boards are also easy to work with for cutting and fabrication. Abet Ltd’s dedicated UK and Ireland Cubicle and Locker Collections comprise over 50 different colours and textures in a range of plain colours,

speckled finishes, woodgrains and textured surfaces. As with all ranges from Abet Laminati, the laminates meet or exceed all European and British performance standards for resistance to wear, heat, moisture, impact and scratching. In addition, they are widely used in situations where high quality performance and design can be carefully crafted together to create an attractive visual experience.

Mapei Launches New Swimming Pool Construction CPD

Mapei (UK) has launched a new Swimming Pool Construction CPD seminar. The new technical seminar will assist in the specification of correct materials, in accordance with current BS and EN Standards. Seminars can be arranged to suit group or specific needs. The new CPD is 30 minutes duration, followed by a Q&A session.

The seminar examines each stage of the build process – from construction of the pool shell, to tiling, and it refers to the relevant design standards throughout. Subject areas include watertight joints, renders, screeds and waterproofing membranes. Later on, the tile installation content explores the various surface options and submerged

conditions, as well as adhesives and grouting. The CPD also tackles specific trouble shooting scenarios – including water plugging – and compares traditional and fast track

construction methods. In addition to the new Swimming Pool CPD, Mapei offers a comprehensive CPD programme, which includes seven RIBA- approved seminars. These include: Avoiding Ceramic Failures, Effective Waterproofing, Epoxy Resin & Cementitious Flooring, Fast Track Screeds, Subfloor Preparation, A Guide to Concrete

Repair, and Render Protected External Wall Insulation (EWI).
