NEWS IN BRIEF
JUMP IN NUMBERS FOR DUNDEE AQUATIC FACILITY The number of people in Dundee taking part in swimming has jumped nearly 20%, with the boom being attributed to the city’s £31m Olympia development.
The swimming centre opened in June 2013 and has been an instant hit. City figures show that between April and December, an average of more than three swimming trips were taken for every person. The facility, which features a 50m main pool as well as a wave pool, rapid river, dive pool and four flumes, attracted over 8,000 swimmers in its first week of operation. The jump in numbers helps to highlight the impact investments in single facilities can have on a wider city, with Dundee reaping far- reaching health benefits since the Olympia opened. “The response to the new Olympia has been really positive, and we are seeing so many people going along – the staff down there have been really busy at all times,” local councillor Stewart Hunter told a local newspaper.
The current Olympia was created in order to replace an old facility located on East Whale Lane.
GO AHEAD GIVEN FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE POOL Swimmers could be set to make a splash at a new Hampshire pool after Fareham Borough Council planning chiefs granted outline planning permission for a multi-million pound swimming pool and leisure facility. Work is expected to begin on the complex within the next 18 months and when built, the complex is expected to include a six lane, 25-metre pool.

Lifeguards Train For Top Qualification At 2012 Olympic Pool
IQL UK, the trading subsidiary of the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), has awarded the newly opened London Aquatics Centre, Approved Training Centre (ATC) status, which means it can now train lifeguards in the industry’s top qualification. The 2012 Olympic venue, operated by charitable social enterprise GLL, is now part of IQL UK’s quality assurance assessment programme, which is designed to provide high standards in training delivery and competent course assessments in lifeguarding.
The venue houses two 50m pools plus a 25m diving pool and, prior to the official public opening last week, it was externally
verified and approved by IQL UK to conduct RLSS UK National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) 8th Edition courses and relevant in-service training. As a registered ATC, the London Aquatics Centre will be supported through regular site visits from RLSS UK Customer Engagement Managers and receive free access to the Ongoing and Training Competency online software, providing a comprehensive tool for managing pool lifeguard training.
The venue will keep its own staff fully trained in the NPLQ and will also earn revenue through the delivery of the RLSS UK NPLQ to external candidates. IQL UK also offers its ATCs access to a range of consultancy services on all aspects of water safety, operational procedures and risk assessment. Tara Dillon, Executive Director of IQL UK, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to have such a prestigious and iconic venue as one of our ATCs and delighted that our partnership with GLL continues to go from strength-to- strength. The London Aquatics Centre boasts world-class facilities and by displaying the ATC plaque it demonstrates to internal and external customers that the centre is delivering the premier lifeguard course in the UK and Ireland.”
Mark Sesnan, Managing Director at GLL, said: “We are delighted that the London Aquatics Centre has now been awarded ATC status. As a world class Olympic venue, it is imperative that GLL lifeguards receive the best available training and hold the highest qualifications.”
ISPE Award Winners
Re-presented at SPATEX earlier in this year, we highlight the four winners from the ISPE’s annual awards.
The Gartside Cup, for Student

The Jim Johnson Filtration Shield which was presented for the best Filtration exam paper, or a technical paper and was won by Andy Lester, and The Peter Horne Memorial Cup which may be presented for the best
Chemical exam paper, or for a technical paper (or presentation) in this field was won by Anita McArthur.
The Selwyn Mindel Award for Performance and Achievement is awarded to individuals for outstanding service to the Institute – to those who have gone that extra mile. This award was presented, posthumously, to Ray Burt. Sadly, Ray died last year, but his cheerful disposition will never be f orgotten. He contributed a great deal to the Institute Filtration

workshops and gave numerous presentations with Chris Carr at Institute Seminars and at SPATEX exhibitions. Nothing was too much trouble for Ray and he gave his time willingly for the Institute on so many occasions. The Institute Council wanted to acknowledge Ray’s contribution over the years, and it is fitting that he should be remembered in this way.
