POOL & SPA INDUSTRY

And The Wider Industry

Working For Our Members

BSPF MANAGING DIRECTOR CHRIS HAYES REPORTS ON A BUSY START OF THE YEAR FOR THE INDUSTRY ASSOCIATIONS AND WHAT’S AHEAD FOR THE REST OF 2014

industry. SPATA has been liaising with colleagues from other European countries to finalise some of the domestic pool standards. The work on the pool construction and installation standards (EN 16582 (parts 1 to 3) have now been reviewed to take into account the comments from the CEN Public Enquiry) and should now be sent back for translation into French and German. Once the standards are agreed, they will be available in 2015. The second series of European Standards for domestic swimming pools are now out for consultation through the CEN Public Enquiry. I hope that you get a chance to view the documents to keep yourself abreast of the proposed work and to provide feedback. Ideally, any feedback will be provided to BSI (online) before the end of July. There is more information about this important topic on page 35. BISHTA is currently in discussions with colleagues about starting the European standards for spas and hot tubs and the first meeting is anticipated to be before the end of this summer.

am delighted to report that each of the companies within the BSPF family has been working hard for both the members of SPATA and BISHTA and also the wider

EUSA Awards 2014 to be held in Lyon this autumn. This represents a fantastic chance to raise the profile of pools and spas across Europe. PIP will also be following up on the good news received by the industry that a recent survey showed that swimming pools are in the top ten most desirable items. Following the success of SPATEX, the profits have again been ploughed back into the industry to give funding to PIP, BSPF and money has also been made available to the ISPE, for their invaluable educational work. The total invested into the industry over the last 18 years has been a phenomenal £1.3m so a huge thank you to everyone that has contributed to this total. In terms of the BSPF, the industry continues to benefit from the liaison with governmental departments such as the Home Office on the forthcoming Explosive Precursors regulations coming into force in the autumn. Information is expected to be available very soon on this important topic and training is being organised at the AGM on Friday 19 September. Talking of the BSPF, there is a feature on Issy Rickards Sanger (Elite Spas) BSPF’s new President on page 36. Issy’s President’s Weekend is being held in Somerset from 19 to 21 September. This industry event is also open to non members, so please book your place to join Issy and Kevin Rickards Sanger in Cricket St Thomas, Somerset. There are options to attend part or all of the weekend and further details are available from the BSPF office.

SPATA does not just get involved with setting standards, but has been exhibiting at Grand Designs Live in London and the event provided opportunities for members (both those that attended the event) and other members who had an enquiry in their area. Looking ahead, LIW is fast approaching (30 September to 2 October) and SPATA is again working with UBM (the show organisers) to exhibit at the show and to support its members that are also exhibiting. LIW is the UK’s biggest annual gathering of leisure professionals and the Pool & Spa section will be featuring a number of exhibitors that want to meet some of the 9,000 people that attend the show.

Not to be outdone, BISHTA will be raising the profile of hot tubs at various shows this year, with key consumer information being made available to its Members. SPN
