Play Time
Remember the fun of making mud pies? If you have some old bits and pieces which you don’t mind being left outdoors you could create a mud kitchen with your children, and they would learn lots of skills at the same time.
Various saucepans, frying pans, bowls and utensils such as whisks, spoons and ladles come in handy, as does a low work surface like a table with sawn-off legs, although that’s not essential. We use an ancient microwave, which ceased to work, for an oven.
Compost does not make good mud because there are too many bits in it but if you are worried about anything nasty being in your borders, you can get sterilised top soil from garden centres. Provide buckets, jugs and squeezy bottles of water.
Children may want to add leaves and petals so chat beforehand about what they may pick.
Hand washing is important, and they will enjoy washing up in sudsy water.

Get real...
A few years ago every new mum used disposable nappies. These days we are all more environmentally aware but many of us still balk at the idea of ‘real’ nappies. But real nappies save money and help preserve the planet which our babies will inherit. So what is available?
Flat nappies - These can be terry squares or pre-folds which are, as the name suggests, pre-folded for convenience. A bit bulky side and less leak-proof than other systems but cheap so good if you want to be eco- friendly but are on a budget. They do need a waterproof cover.
Shaped nappies - Shaped at the hip and waist for a better fit. They can fasten with velcro, loops or poppers and tend to be leak-resistant. They come in all manner of materials from organic cotton to lightweight and breathable bamboo, and can be slim for daytime wear under more fitted clothing or bulkier for more absorption at night. You can buy them in cute colours with waterproof covers to match.
All-in-ones – These have a waterproof layer built in. They are the most expensive system but very convenient. You can also get pocket systems which are similar but allow you to separate out the various bits of the nappy for washing purposes.
Smelly nappy pails are a thing of the past. Most systems are now designed for washing every other day and are stored in a sealed dry pail in a laundry bag ready for dumping into the washing machine.

And there are even nappy laundry services available. Dirty nappies are collected from your doorstep and clean, fresh ones left in their place. There has never been a better time to get real and help the planet.
