When I joined eight years ago as a shy primary-two boy I had no idea of all the amazing experiences that the Dunblane Boys’ Brigade would give me. Highlights in Anchor Boys and Junior Section included sponsored walks, football tournaments, swimming galas and winning the Sportsmanship Trophy when I was in Primary 6.

Two years ago in Company Section I got the opportunity to learn to play the flute and join the BB Band. This has changed my life. The highpoint of my time with the Band so far has been travelling to Germany last summer, along with 1st Tulliallan BB, to perform at the Loreley Tattoo in front of 15,000 people. The crowd went mad when we marched on stage.

As well as practising with the band, and attending weekly BB nights and bible class, I have competed in national cross-country, quiz, swimming and football tournaments. I have also gone to two week-long BB camps, near Blackpool and Ayr, competed in Scotland-wide BB Bands competitions, performed at many concerts and events, and competed in the two-day, overnight Kilbryde Hike, which is the most difficult thing I have ever done. But I couldn’t believe how great I felt when our team finished second in our age group.

The BB has also given me the opportunity to give something back to the community by playing in the Band at local events such as fetes, gala days and Remembrance Sunday. I have also enjoyed regularly helping at Start-Up Stirling’s food bank collections and finding out how much good the charity is doing. Next year I am looking forward to working towards my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award which includes volunteering in the community, more concerts, more sports and more fun. I hope that I will always be involved in the Boys Brigade. Cameron Lonsdale (age 13)

I have been in the Boys’ Brigade for about a year and a half now, joining much later than most of my peers. When I first joined, I was made to feel very welcome by the boys and officers. I knew some of the boys from primary school and I also made lots of new friends very quickly. We meet on a Friday night and the officers have always planned out a range of activities. Every Friday is different! I soon discovered, however, that Fridays and Sunday bible class are only some of the events that the BB has to offer.

Soon after joining I was included in the national BB football 5-a-sides. Since then I have been involved in national and local competitions including cross- country, orienteering, first aid, basketball, football, quizzes and drill. Perhaps

the best thing I have done in the BB is joining the Band! I was given an instrument and have learned to play the alto saxophone and really enjoy performing in the band. We have performed at Edinburgh Castle for the Beating of the Retreat and recently for Prince Edward’s visit to the General Assembly as well as many local performances.

Another highlight was being part of the comedy double act in the first ever BB Panto! (DVDs still available to buy from the BB) I loved my time on stage and I will definitely audition for the next panto. By the time you read this, I will have returned from a trip with the BB to London to see Trooping the Colour, with a visit to the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, a West End show and a high speed boat ride down the Thames. I can’t wait! I really enjoy the Boys’ Brigade and all it has to offer. I would like to thank all the officers for working so hard to make the Boys’ Brigade such a success! Ross Mason (age 12)
