St. Mary’s Primary School
St Mary’s Host a Food For Fitness Festival at the Dunblane Hydro!
The Food For Fitness Festival event was the culmination of their work and investigations into food and how it relates to keeping themselves fit and healthy. For this they worked with a wide variety of community partners including; Geoff Cook from the Sherrifmuir Inn and Karen Yearsley from Learn Wild. The Dunblane Hydro also generously donated the use of their function suites and a designated a team to work with the pupils to co-ordinate the event. As a result of this the school were able to invite the other local schools and members of the community to join them at their learning celebration.
The extravaganza was opened by Judy and Jamie Murray, who stressed the importance of healthy diet and nutrition for athletes, before the whole school performed a Commonwealth Dance to link to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer.
Performances from each of the classes followed including a re-telling of The Enormous Turnip from P1/2, a Water Cycle Dance from P3/4, a Food Glorious Food dance from P5/6 and a Food Groups song from P7. There was plenty of other information in the stands that filled the room. One of the many highlights was the buffet which was full of sandwiches with fillings from the P1/2 Healthy sandwich competition. The P3/4s were also able to offer nettle soup and nettle cordial which had been made as a part of their Outdoor Learning.
Jonathan from P4 said “It was a big surprise that Judy and Jamie came to open the event. Judy even came to the P3/4 stall and even tried some of the nettle cordial and soup”
For those who wanted to learn in greater detail, the University of Stirling Sport Science team were on hand to show how you can test your bodies to see how healthy and fit you really are. They were assisted by the P7s who had been to visit their testing laboratories at the university. For the younger visitors MicroFitness brought their mini treadmills and exercise bikes to give them a taste of what it feels like to get fit!
Throughout the afternoon 4 Dunblane Hydro chefs were tasked with cooking a meal for an athlete from a mystery bag of ingredients given to them by four children. This was then judged by Team Scotland swimmer Sian Harkin and the Head Chef from the hotel.
A mass Zumba session led by MicroFitness was a fitting finale to the Festival!
Victoria Winkler, a St Mary’s parent enthused about the event saying, “I had great fun at the food for fitness at the Hydro. Inspiration of all kinds: dancing, theatre, sport, live cooking demos, fresh food, huge variety of stands . . . such a diverse and rich day. A really huge thanks for the tremendous amount of work in organising it all – it was a really professional and inspirational event.”
