KEEPING FIT AND HEALTHY AT DUNBLANE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Children from all classes at Dunblane Primary have been enjoying a range of activities for their recent Health fortnight. Some of these activities included badminton, rugby, football, curling and athletics. The focus has been on children learning outdoors as much as possible, eating healthily and trying a wide range of physical activities many of which were new to the children.

Active Stirling, school staff and parents have provided the opportunities for this to happen and Mrs Patrick, Principal teacher with responsibility for Health and Wellbeing was responsible for the organisation and coordination of the event. Stirling Council’s Catering services provided tasting samples from the school dinner menus for children to try and these were enjoyed by the children. A local dental hygienist spoke to P3-P7 about the importance of brushing teeth correctly and looking out for hidden sugars in our foods and soft drinks. Feedback from the children throughout the two weeks was very positive and they rose to every challenge they were presented with, identifying what they needed to do to make themselves

run faster, throw further, jump longer jumps etc. Here are a few of their comments

“It was fun rolling the curling stones at the targets.” Andrew Stevenson “I learned how to do the shots for badminton. It was fun.” Amelie Scott “I liked the relay races because it made me run faster.” Jacob McDonald “I learned how to throw the soft javelin into the target in the circle.” Ryan Johnston “ When you are throwing the javelin, it’s best to hold it at the back.” Lewis Kirkbright “If you swing your arms when you are jumping, it helps you cut through the air and if you bend your knees you can jump further. “ Reuben LaVallee “I enjoyed the dance mats because there was lots of music and even though the last dance was hard to copy, I tried hard.” Keirna Strachan

At the end of May children were presented with their WOW (Walk Once a Week) badges and Dunblane Primary has regularly featured on the “Scotland Walk of Fame Top 10” which shows how many of our school are walking, cycling or park and striding to school each day.
