I am in my second year at Boys Brigade and so far it’s been an amazing experience. Every Friday at 7.45 I and many other boys go to Boys’ Brigade and partake in a vast variety of fun and exciting activities. Some of these include sports, team activities etc, drill (marching), quizzes, visitors and more. Throughout my time in BB I have done many things and have made loads of new friends. I have gone to Nethybridge, a two-day residential full of fun activities. In it I did orienteering, skiing, crate-climbing challenges and there was even a swimming pool for us to enjoy. For the recent BB display night I learned to do vaulting gymnastics and others did synchronised exercises. Recently I have been attending training hike sessions for the Kilbryde Hike, a 30-or-so-mile hike that takes place over two days and will be a great but hard challenge. As I write this I will be setting off tomorrow morning to an unknown destination and I’m very nervous and excited. Overall I’ve had a really fun and exciting time in the Boys’ Brigade in the short time since I joined in P7 and look forward to seeing what else is in store. Harvey Russell (age 12)

I joined the Boys’ Brigade in April 2013 and I think it is the best decision I ever made. I feel very proud to be in the Boys’ Brigade and in my short time there I have already got my silver badge. We all work hard for our badges, learning and taking part in something different in the five badge-work areas each week. We make sure that we are clean, tidy and show our respect to one another. I have made lots of new friends. We went on a two night camp trip to Dumfries House which was a great experience. We play sports every Friday when we are there. This year I led a team of boys in a figure marching competition in Clackmannan and we won proudly and got a big shield. That was a great feeling and we got our picture in the paper. We also put on a pantomime this year

and my friends and I were in it. We did some singing and for a very short time were in the Brownies, Ha ha! We learn a lot about stories from the bible which is very important. I will be moving to the Company Section along with my P6 friends in August next term. We are all looking to having more badges to display on our uniform. If any boys are interested in trying out new things, join the Boys’ Brigade - it really is good fun. James Carter (age 10)

Back in S3, I was actually starting to get quite jealous of my friends who were in BB: hearing about all the amazing activities they got to take part in, and all the different places they got to go; gaining minor credits to major ones like the President’s and Queen’s Badges, prestigious awards that look great on your CV, or the Duke of Edinburgh’s award, a challenging but rewarding feat involving volunteering, expeditions, getting fit and learning new skills. So many things that I had heard about the Boys’ Brigade were things that interested me - so much so that I decided to join at the beginning of S4. I dived straight into different activities and challenges. Some of the best were learning to ski both at Xscape and with the BB leaders at Cairngorm, learning to scuba dive, visiting the world’s largest indoor climbing arena, hiking up Munros and of course, gaining my President’s Badge and Silver Duke of Edinburgh award - all in one year! We are encouraged to remember, and strive to help, others less fortunate, and it is inspiring and satisfying to help, even in a small way, organisations like Startup Stirling, which makes you appreciate what you have when you realise others sometimes don’t even have the basics. Every Friday and Sunday is enjoyable, as the officers always had either a great or weird idea, one of which at one point even resulted my being covered in chocolate sauce! I would definitely recommend the Boys’ Brigade to any boy, as it gives you so many fun yet different opportunities, so many different skills and achievements for the future, new friends and a good laugh. I am very glad that I joined, and will always be looking forward to each weekend at BB. Campbell McNicol (age 15)
