❧ COOKING COMPANION ➊ ➋

STAKE YOUR

BROAD BEANS ➊ If you want to grow broad beans, I hope you sowed them a

couple of months ago! Support can be put in place now. Get an adult to help you hammer in some stakes at each corner of your rows and run some soft horticultural string along each side of each row. Don’t forget to water them regularly.

➋ If you have grown broad beans before, you might have

noticed they become clogged with little black fl ies. These fl ies are attracted by the juicy tips, so as soon as your beans begin to form, just pinch the growing

tips out and the fl ies will not fi nd your plants so appealing. Add lines of string up the posts until you pinch out the tops.

➌ The trick with all beans is that you need to harvest them before

they get too big; otherwise you get a tough and stringy mouthful! Tender beans do not need much cooking and are lovely served with young carrots which can be harvested at the same time – great with the Sunday roast.

➍ When your beans start to fl ower, they will need pollinating

to allow the pods to form. If you come along to Rosemoor during the May half term you will be able to learn all about pollinating insects and how to attract them.
