Welcome FOODLOVERS
It’s May, we are fi nally seeing some sunshine, and local produce is getting the boost of warmth and light it so desperately needs. After a long, wet winter, seasonal delicacies are fi nally beginning to fi lter through to the shops and we have plenty of asparagus and new potato recipes for you to try (page 9). In preparation for the bank holidays, Katy Hofstede-Smith has given us some creative garden party ideas for making the most of the sunshine (page 18). We also reveal some dainty recipes to impress your guests with; this is fi nger food at its best. I have been making a concerted eff ort to eat more vegetables lately and our feature
on page 28 should help anybody else to do the same. Whether you are vegan, vegetarian or simply trying to eat more veg there are plenty of options available in the West Country and some delicious recipes to add to your repertoire.
For those of you that follow a gluten or dairy free diet we look at the rise in
awareness as well as the availability of alternative options (page 37). We also off er guidance for eating out on a ‘free from’ diet and suggest some recipes that won’t make you feel like you are missing out. The South West is at the forefront of a move towards sustainable, ethical
produce and we are proud to support it. We spoke to Steve Glover of the Severn Project in Bristol (page 50), which is helping people to get their lives back on track through food. We also spoke to Devon’s Tim Maddams (page 48) who is working on a new project designed to reduce food miles and bring local food to a village hall near you. If you know of an inspirational food
project near you we would love to hear about it. As usual we welcome your ideas and feedback.
