How does your
eans are one of the easiest and tastiest crops to grow and have one of the prettiest fl owers; white, pink and scarlet. Runner bean seeds can be planted outside now and broad beans should be big enough to need their growing supports.
PLANT RUNNER BEAN
SEEDS OUTSIDE ❤ Runner bean seeds can be planted in May when there is no longer a danger of
frost. You need to make sure the plants will have plenty to feed on, so dig in plenty of well-rotted farmyard manure or garden compost.
❤ The thing about runner beans is that you can use your imagination when pro-
viding a support for them to climb. You can use wigwams, arches, long rows or any combination. Get an adult to help you build your supports because the beans will grow much taller than you!
❤ Rather than making a hole for each bean seed, which will be very boring,
make a trench about 5cm deep in the shape you want, put in your supports and pop the beans in at about 15cm apart, cover and give them a good watering. When the new plants emerge, water during dry spells and gently twist them around the supports until they are old enough to haul themselves up on their own. By then, they can be left to their own devices until they start to produce lovely crisp beans ready for the pot. Dwarf runner beans for example ‘Hes-
tia’ are also available; the advantage of these is that they do not need something to climb up.
