central characters (the lager lout who wins a 30 million pound lottery in his latest, Lionel Abso: State of England; the thuggish Keith Talent in London Fields) and in Self, he plays up the debauchery fully. He is a sad, sickly charade – a metaphor for the excesses of modern life. The son of the renowned novelist
Kingsley Amis (The Old Devils, Lucky Jim) the younger Amis was as much a raconteur as his famous father, so maybe it is part self-portrayal. Both of them had a reputation for love of the drink, although Amis’ recent relocation from London to Brooklyn might be a sign he’s easing up on the decadence slightly. Now he’s a bit less like his memorable characters in real life, perhaps. There’s always fire and shock
value in his writing, though. Money is a scathing take on excess, and what happens when the fuel feeding it is suddenly gone, from one of the best writers of our generation.
