One Hell of a Ride

By ALEX LEWIS

Let me paint a picture for you. March, 2013. Three 20-something cousins sat well lubricated in a local bar. I know. Already a great start, right? They started mumbling about “taking a weekend and hitting the road”. But that quickly

ballooned into a motorcycle trip that could only be described as one of epic proportions. I won’t bore you with the details of the motorcycle accident on day one or our visit to

the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame on day two. Let’s jump into the good stuff. Because this trip became about the kindness of

strangers and the unspoken natural bond between brothers, cousins and friends who ride motorcycles. June 11, 2013. Around 7:30 pm, we pulled off to fuel up, and back on the road we

went. Like modern-day cowboys riding steel horses, we rode into the sunset. But just like Trigger, the horse eventually became little more than a mantelpiece. Along I-71 through Kentucky, I knew from the sound I had blown the differential, and

the gear spline would be little more than metal shavings. We put the kickstand down and shoved two pieces of large rock under the frame. I took the back tire off. After doing a few passes, and I suppose realizing something was wrong, “Billy Big

Rig” tow truck driver (I’m quite sure that wasn’t his name, but he was missing some teeth, had a mouth full of chew and a flannel shirt with the arms torn off. You get the picture) stopped and asked if we were all right.
