BEST-LOVED WATERING HOLES

By TERRY RYAN Well, it wasn’t the very next day, but the

Cat has come back – the Cheshire Cat, that is. We had the pleasure of dropping in early

on a Saturday night for a feast of fish and chips. Let there be no doubt, the Cat is back in full swing, and the food is as good as ever. Everyone seems to know, as there was quite the line up by 6; however, owner Dustin (with his wife, Crystal) Therrien offered the group a sample of Kitchessippi Phoenix the Cat beer in mini-beer mugs. Before you knew it, everyone was seated. So don’t worry too much about a long wait. On January 28, 2012, this favourite local

was caught up in flames. Now, 11 months and $1.1 million later,

this establishment is looking good. Dustin and Crystal Therrien had a soft opening on the 19th of December, 2013, and the official reopening was December 20th. After the devastating blaze, the community

came out in force to support the pub and its staff. A fundraiser was organized less than a month after the fire to raise money for the employees who were suddenly unemployed.

They were able to raise more than $33,000 to help the displaced staff. Various organizations came through with

a variety of products or services to help the fundraiser become a success – including a couple of community-minded sports personalities such as Norris trophy winner Erik Karlsson and former captain Daniel Alfredsson, who donated signed sweaters for auction. It is no wonder that this community feels

such a bond with the Pub. The old vintage limestone building has

been around a long time. It started out as a schoolhouse in 1883 and continued to operate as such until 1956, when it became a private residence. After a stint as a tea room in the late ‘80s, it

became a pub in the ‘90s. There are still former students of that little schoolhouse who pop in from time to time and a couple of class pics on the wall going upstairs. As a pub it can be best described as an adult

community centre, where everyone is welcome and there is always room for one more at the bar.
