The project has beenmet

with support fromPrime MinisterDavidCameron, who visited the plant this summer and said: “It’s great to see a family farming business like Wyke Farms investing in such an innovative green energy scheme. Making use of their waste products in order to become 100 per cent self-sufficient in green energy willmake themmore efficient and help the environment.” The £4million project has

had its complexities and challenges along theway; but it has beenworth it, says Richard. “It’s not very often that you can do a project that you are genuinely proud of and something that your ancestors and childrenwill be proud of. It fits in nicelywith everything elsewe do here, too.” Askedwhat advice hewould

give to others considering such projects, Richard offered this: “Do the research, workwith good professionals and look for

a green energy installation that uses the natural resources that the business has.And get on with it quick. If businesses like ours don’t invest using the resourceswe have, then the big investors and pension funds will use up all the subsidies themselves.” What’s next atWyke Farms?

Well, there are still some roofs that haven’t had the solar treatment yet, and then they will bemoving on to phase two of the biogas plant – gas. The next stagewill allowWyke Farms to produce gas for their own use aswell as supplying the grid. But project green probably

won’t end there. “The thing about 100 per cent green is it’s a commitment to a sustainable, greenway of doing business,” says Richard. “It isn’t going to stop because the technology and green best practice keeps changing and evolving. You think you’ve got there, then suddenly there are a load of other things you can do!”
