In the USA, pool heat pump performance is measured and certified by the AHRI (Air- Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute). In the UK, domestic heat pumps are tested and certified by the MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) however currently there is no standard for measuring the performance of pool heat pumps in the UK and Europe. Domestic heat pumps are also rated using SCOP (Seasonal Coefficient of Performance) to give an average performance over the running season of the heat pump rather than COP figures which can give unrealistic optimum performance in laboratory conditions. As a leading supplier of swimming pool heat pumps, HeatPumps4Pools add value by advising their customers on the real-world performance of pool heat pumps to suit UK and European climates.

The proposed ERP directive should help to define noise outputs and the overall performance of pool heat pumps to an independent standard which should help eliminate poorly performing products to benefit suppliers and customers.

Any supplier of swimming pool heat pumps concerned about being caught up in the legal implications of the new ERP Directive can relax. The new Heatstar Aquarius not only comfortably exceeds the minimum legal standard of 2013, but is so efficient that it even clears the more difficult forthcoming 2015 regulation.

This ‘super efficiency’ is possible because Heatstar use a special type of high tech ‘digital’ fan engineering, produced in Germany, that couples a

DC motor to a frequency inverter. The electricity fed to the motor is Electronically Commutated (EC) to achieve a unidirectional current.

Heatstar have pioneered this ‘variable speed’ technology over many years with great success for their indoor pool climate control systems.

The special fan also offers the best possible noise characteristics and uses sickle blades with edge profiling derived by studying the design characteristics of the wings of owls.

HEAT PUMP TECHNOLOGY PLUS Successfully launched at SPATEX 2012 and with a full year of successful sales under their belt, Fairlocks Pool Products say that in Heatinverter Plus they can provide customers with the quietest and most efficient system on the market. The maximum COP. can be achieved under different ambient temperatures. One kilowatt input of electricity provides a heating output of up to 7kW. With a newly designed air-flow system, low speed motor and quiet running compressor, combined with new out-facing digital control system, Heatinverter Plus is the heat pump of the moment… and the future. The strong aluminum alloy frame is encased in durable plastic to ensure strength and rust free operation. Within the case is a high quality titanium heat exchanger that is compatible with salt electrolysis and the silver welding piping guarantees reliability and prevents gas leakage. Engineers will be pleased to note that the electrical system is located on the top side to allow for easy access when servicing.

VOLUME OF SALES KEEPS GARDEN PAC PRICES COMPETITIVE SCP introduced a range of six heat pumps in Europe in 2011 under their own brand name of ‘Garden Pac’. SCP is able to offer the Garden Pac heat pumps at competitive prices due to the combined volume their European business generates. Good prices and excellent features such as titanium heat exchanges, defrost, digital controls and quiet operation whilst returning efficient running statistics are the reasons why the Garden Pac is becoming popular with trade tustomers. The GP06 which is the largest unit in the range also features a ‘soft start’ as standard. A ‘Try Me’ offer is being promoted on all first time purchases of any Garden Pac heat hump.

Zodiac Heat Pumps are proud to be the first swimming pool heat pump to gain the NF PAC accreditation from the French government. The NF certification ensures the claimed energy performance and the noise produced are as marketed. The performance figures are tested and certified by the ‘Centre

Zodiac’s Power First Premium model

de Transfert de Technologie du Mans’ (CTTM) in compliance with the EN ISO 3741 and EN ISO 354 standards, guaranteeing the claimed efficiency and noise levels. With calls for regulation and benchmark performance reporting, the Power First Premium is setting the standards by which comparisons can be made. As the first stage of the ERP directive covers only heat pumps with fan motors over 125W all Zodiac heat pumps already fall below this as 125W would only be necessary in large commercial units. Designed and manufactured in Europe the Zodiac Power First Premium is not only the highest selling swimming pool heat pump but the market leader in performance and quietness. With the NF certification Zodiac, and their customers, can rest assured that the whole range “does what it says on the box”.
