Safeguarding The Future Of The Industry

hope that SPATEX has provided you with an excellent start to the year so far. The industry event was very well received, by exhibitors and visitors alike. The ISPE have reported on a significant increase in the numbers attending their workshops this year, which is fantastic news.

Michele, Helen and the SPATEX Directors can be very proud of the show this year, not least the growing numbers of partners that supported the industry show. Having PWTAG and t he STA in Brighton was very beneficial for everyone in our industry and the list of partners was very impressive.

We need to work just as hard next year and as most of you will know by now, we are moving SPATEX 2014 to The Ricoh Arena in the Midlands. Exhibitors have reacted warmly to news of the move to Coventry and SPATEX took this opportunity to work with The Ricoh, as they can now accept bookings at least 12 months in advance. Previously, until the football fixtures were announced in the June / July of each year, it was not possible to then book an event for a specific date after this time and of course SPATEX needs to book up for the following February. More information on SPATEX can be found on page 45. During SPATEX, the industry gala dinner, including the SPATA and BISHTA Awards, was very well attended again this year, with approximately 275 people going. May I congratulate all of the award recipients for

SPATA sponsors

their success and a huge thank you to the Award sponsors, judges and support team that put the event together. Particular thanks are extended to Bob Kent (MSI) and Patrick Thorpe (Certikin International) for their excellent promotional film on the history of the industry and to those companies that financially contributed to the film, I am very grateful. The film was particularly good at reminding us all that our industry has worked best when it learns to cooperate and work together on items such as Marketing and PR. I would like to welcome Martin Borley (Tanby Pools) to the role of BSPF President and I know that he is keen to work on behalf of the whole industry, but especially pool builders, to continue raising standards in our industry. There is a feature on Martin on page 33 regarding his aspirations for his Presidential year. Martin succeeds John Scott as President, who has been a staunch supporter of the BSPF and the wider industry and now that John is Immediate Past President, his work will continue on the BSPF Board (amongst other commitments). John will also be giving us an update in a later issue of SPN on his continuing role as EUSA’s President. John will be chairing two meetings this year of the European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations (EUSA) and there will be an exciting opportunity for some Award recipients from this year’s event to be entered into the EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards to be held at aquanale in Cologne this October. Other BSPF Officers this year include Issy Rickards Sanger (Elite Spas) who is Vice President, Richard Carrington (Calorex Heat Pumps) who is Junior Vice President and Patrick Thorpe (Certikin International) who is Company Secretary. Their expertise and views are greatly appreciated.

The industry benefits from not only having the

BSPF as the voice of the industry, but also SPATA (chaired by Richard Carrington) and BISHTA (chaired by Issy Rickards Sanger) as the respective Trade Associations for swimming pools and Hot Tubs. PIP (chaired by Jamie Adams, Golden Coast) and SPATEX (chaired by Howard Gosling, Pool and Spa Advice) comprise the other companies in the BSPF family. Each company is fortunate to have a team of dedicated Board, Council or Committee members working on its behalf. All of the companies sets its own work priorities and through collaboration, each can make sure the whole industry benefits from their actions. This cooperation can be demonstrated with examples, such as SPATA members supporting the Trade Association by attending Grand Designs Live. Companies take it in turn to staff the consumer show and thereby help to promote themselves and the wider pool industry. With challenging times still ahead, it should be reassuring to know that there are dedicated people wanting to safeguard the future of our whole industry and I am very grateful for the assistance they are prepared to offer.
