Perhaps the wealth of new products at the start of the year played their part in that optimism. After all, with two busy shows in quick succession many products and innovations were being seen by the wider industry for the fi rst time.

Well what a difference a year makes. Cast your minds back twelve months and the headline news was hosepipe bans (or Temporary Water Use Bans to give them their proper title) and the effect they were having on the industry. By contrast, this March and infact most of 2013 so far it’s been freezing cold, with snow falling on many parts of the country and weather warnings in full effect. Well at least the chances of water use bans have surely been negated, well for the foreseeable future anyway!

So it’s a real shame that yet again the not so reliable UK weather is having an effect on the industry, especially as there seemed to be an apparent air of optimism doing the rounds at the start of the year, albeit tinged with a degree of caution which quite rightly would be sensible. With the launch of the new UK Pool & Spa Expo at the NEC which was well received by both exhibitors and visitors alike closely followed by arguably one of the best SPATEX exhibitions for many a year in Brighton, there defi nitely seemed to be a different mood across the industry. I for one was gearing up for an improved 2013 on the

Whatever the reason, long may it continue – the optimism that is, not the weather! After all, there are reasons to be cheerful. Take for instance the entries in the SPATA and BISHTA Awards which were held in early February. They provided the perfect platform to showcase what a great job the industry is doing across the UK. Also the fact that the shows were busy when weather could so easily have put people off visiting tells me that things are looking up. This is echoed in the amount of attendees at the ISPE seminars at SPATEX who were hungry for more industry knowledge. All are small signs of an improving mind set and hopefully economy too.

Here at SPN, we’re cracking on with our 2013 plans and have recently launched a Facebook page and one for our sister consumer title What Pool & Hot Tub too. With a Twitter facility already in place and as we look to provide more regular information electronically via social media and emailers, so please ensure you have our details – you can sign up to each via our website.
