According to the council, their on-pack label demonstrates that seafood comes from farms that limit their impacts on the environment and the community, allowing consum- ers to make a conscious choice to purchase responsi- bly-farmed seafood.
The label is complimentary to that used by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), which is used on wild fish that have been deemed sus- tainably managed. The introduction of the ASC certification programme is seen as an important step towards demonstrating to consumers that the fish comes from producers who have worked to limit their impact on the environment and have also demonstrated social responsibil- ity towards their workforce.
‘After the successful launch of the ASC Tilapia standard in March, I am very happy to be able to introduce our second ASC Standard,’ said Chris Ninnes. ‘This is a clear signal that ASC is making tremendous progress towards its goal of becoming the world’s leading certification and labelling pro- gramme for responsibly farmed seafood. ASC helps bring farmed pangasius to the market from farms that have proved to limit their environmental and social impacts.
