: What key issues emerged from your dealings with the salmon industry in 2012?

: As far as salmon is concerned it is a year that was characterised by an intensive search for increased capacity, a strong desire to expand and to balance production. From The Crown Estate’s perspective the key thing the salmon industry needs to address is its relationships and engagement – many problems that have occurred have arisen from the manner in which issues have been ap- proached. It’s clear that the industry should be more comprehensive and embark upon pre-ap- plication consultations earlier. We have seen those companies that have been successful in obtaining new sites recently put a lot of effort into this aspect, and it has borne fruit. We revised the terms of Lease Option Agree- ments in September so that producers looking to develop sites now have a longer period in which to undertake stakeholder engagement in pursuit of development consents.
