Motoring
Hard to believe, perhaps, but the allroad actually feels more capable than its ordinary A6 siblings, largely because it is possible to choose a 15mm lower, road- gripping setting that helps those fat tires stay glued to the road. In fact, it is so good in so many situations that it is tempting to suggest it has been given the wrong name; that the allroad should have been named the allround instead. Such misconceptions though are quickly forgotten when the car is taken into the bracken. A quick fiddle with the alloy wizard controls and the car rises to the challenge. Literally. In allroad mode, the A6 stands up tall, up to 60mm higher than its lowest setting. The process transforms this capable motorway warrior into a Rambo- style guerrilla soldier, without the face paint. Even in the heat of the battle, the car comes suited like a city gent, and can come complete with body-coloured wheel arches, bumpers and sills – though those can be had in contrasting colours for owners who prefer a more rugged look. Travel on rocky tracks, down steep and
muddy banks or through fast-flowing brooks is not only easy, but fun too. It seems the car with its permanent quattro four-wheel drive can do more than merely transport you across bumpy car parks by any polo field. It might seem like a good idea to make it your only car. The road experience, after

all, may make you question the need for a separate sportscar. Chose the BiTDi version and you will be rewarded with acceleration from 0 to 60mph in 5.6 seconds. Offroad, the car’s capabilities suggest the pick-up truck might be superfluous too, coming as it does with 1,680 litres of boot space when the rear seats are down plus a towing limit of 2,500kg. Those are silly thoughts, of course. Keep your dreams of a Ferrari, an Aston Martin or an Audi R8. After all, you would not really want to take the allroad on to the race track.
The idea of transporting hay in the back is equally daft, as you will see once you discover what an incredibly nice
place the cabin is. Slip into the Milano leather-covered driver’s seat and be wowed as the Bang & Olufsen sound system’s tweeters rise like two meerkat heads, ready to entertain. Enjoy the look as well as the touch of the elegantly non-intrusive, well-chosen materials used throughout the cabin. Control knobs, switches and levers give you a sense of effortless control. It is too good not to share, and
fortunately the passenger seat and the space in the back are equally lush for your family and friends. So forget about the hay for now. Who would want to spoil the car’s tranquility during a moment like this?
