1985 – 2009.


Swiss patron and Guards Polo Club member Adriano Agosti has won the World Cup on Snow some six times.


The St Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow was cancelled in 2012, the first time in its 27-year history, as the ice


was not thick enough.


The first electric light in Switzerland was installed at the Kulm Hotel in 1878 and St Moritz was the first town


in the Alps to have electric trams.


Snow polo is played with an oversized, bright


orange or red plastic ball for obvious reasons!


The St Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow began in 1985 and was sponsored by Cartier from

St Moritz is known as the “Top of the World” with the slogan being trademarked by the St Moritz


Tourist Authority!


This Swiss resort has been the venue for two Winter Olympics – in 1928 and 1948. The grandstand


which was built for the 1928 event is still there today.


In 1965, the grass polo pitch was converted to an altitude training centre for athletes competing in the


1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City.


St Moritz is home to the famous Cresta Run bobsleigh run, ¾ mile ice run that was first opened in


1885. Today the Cresta Run opens just before Christmas for around nine weeks.


The Carlton is the only hotel in the Engardine region to boast a three Michelin-starred restaurant,


although these stars are courtesy of its Italian chefs, Enrico and Roberto Cerea.

The majority of the native population of St Moritz speak German, with Italian and


Portuguese being the next most frequent languages spoken by the resident community.


The fabulous Polo World Cup On Snow Gala Dinner takes place every year at the Kempinski


Grand Hotel des Bains, one of the oldest hotels in St Moritz. In fact, the Kempinski hotel group is Europe’s oldest hotel chain.


There are 13,000 beds to rent in St Mortiz – whether in hotels or chalets – offering polo fans,


skiers or alpine lovers a huge choice of accommodation.

When hotel founder Johannes Badrutt made a bet with four British tourists who were visiting St Moritz in the summer of 1864 to return in the winter and if it was not to their liking, he would pay for the cost of


their journey, it was the start of winter tourism in the Alps. Switzerland’s first tourist office opened in St Moritz in 1864.

St Moritz has featured in several films including the opening scenes of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1934


film The Man Who Knew Too Much. It has also been namechecked in a couple of James Bond films too, Goldfinger in 1964 and the 1981 movie For Your Eyes Only.
