CHAR LIE PIDGLE Y

I think the opportunities are increasing as there are a lot of talented players in my age group with plenty of good teams who are really happy to invite us to play with them in tournaments at various levels...

T

hen there’s Charlie Pidgley. He has a shock of ice blond hair and looks like butter wouldn’t melt. But we’re not so sure as we’ve

been hearing he is playing pretty tough off his -1 handicap and loves mountain biking. His father, Tony was patron of his

own high-goal team Cadenza for over a decade and counted John Paul Clarkin as one of his professionals. Despite having such ready access to the sport, Charlie admits that he wasn’t that keen on polo to begin with and remembers being dragged round to matches with his sisters. In the last three or four years though, he freely admits to being totally bitten by the bug. At 15, we’re thinking it may have a little to do with girls at Pony Club, but probably more to do with the fact that this past summer he has had the opportunity to play with the Merlos brothers and Adolfo Cambiaso. Not bad for someone who admitted to thinking adult polo was “pretty scary” when he first gave it a try. Master Pidgley has played a lot at his ex-prep, Papplewick and has managed to squeeze in more than a few chukkas at his new school, Pangbourne College too. Playing at Guards has been an education and he joined many of his peers in the low-goal tournaments, but also held his own against the seasoned competition in Pommery Archie David games too.

Another one to watch scale the ladder to professional polo player? “I would really like to be a professional one day. I think the opportunities are increasing as there are a lot of talented players in my age group with plenty of good teams who are really happy to invite us to play with them in tournaments at various levels.” Away from the pitch? “Outside of polo I like to go mountain biking with my Dad. I also really enjoy the Duke of Edinburgh at school and I am currently in the Marines CCF at school and we did Ten Tors on Dartmoor last May, which was really tough but a great experience.”
