Glen Gilmore heads to Polo Office at Smith’s Lawn

G

uards Polo Club has announced that Glen Gilmore is to be Guards Polo Club’s Polo Manager from the 2013 season. The captain of the Australian polo team, who played off an eight-goal handicap at the height of his career, will take up his position at the start of the 2013 season. Glen was thrilled with this news, saying: “I am delighted to take up this coveted role at Guards Polo Club, especially as some of my most memorable games have been played on the high- goal grounds at Smith’s Lawn. This is, without doubt, the number one job in polo management anywhere in the world and so the opportunity to work closely with the great team at Guards, creating some of the world’s best known polo tournaments, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” The Club’s Chief Executive Neil Hobday,

Chairman of the Selection Panel, praised Glen and thanked the Panel for its excellent work. “Glen Gilmore is definitely the right man for this tough job. He brings much experience of the game at the highest level combined with a deep understanding of the ways of Guards Polo Club, thanks to his earlier work as our Chief Umpire.”

Glen will take up his position at Smith’s Lawn in April 2013, working alongside Assistant Polo Manager Emma Leiva and Polo Secretary Tara Smith.

Clubhouse takes starring role in Ridley Scott film F M

ilm director Ridley Scott spent a day at Guards Polo Club this summer, shooting his latest film The Counselor. He was joined by Hollywood stars Penelope Cruz and Michael Fassbender, who featured in a scene inside our Clubhouse, which was redesigned as an American country club. The staff at Guards Polo Club were fascinated as Hollywood rolled into Smith’s Lawn, with marquees for the many extras and hair and makeup rivalling anything seen on our big polo days. The film, which also stars Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem and Cameron Diaz, is due for worldwide release on 13 November 2013. When it comes to a cinema near you keep an eye on the polo and see how much of your Club and how many players you recognise on the big screen.
