FOREWORD CHAIRMAN'S

W

hat a year 2012 has been. Despite the worst rain to be seen in the UK since records began, Guards Polo

Club hosted an incredible 501 matches this season. One of the highlights for me was a memorable final for the Cartier Queen’s Cup in June. I was delighted to accompany HM The Queen and Arnaud Bamberger to the presentation arena to present this most prestigious trophy to Ali Albwardy’s Dubai team. The Club acknowledged Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee a week later during the Al Habtoor Royal Windsor Cup Final by presenting her with a very personal album of images of the Royal Family at the Club over the past five decades. The introduction of the Audi International

brought fresh challenges and a new perspective to our fixture list in late July. The result was a wonderful day of sport with both England and South Africa being at the top of their game, much to the delight of our President, who watched the game with an expert eye from the Royal Box. The addition of the two grounds at

Coworth Park has been a great success and we look forward to working with Zoe and her team at the hotel more closely next year. One benefit of this new relationship has been the creation of the Guards Polo Academy with Andrew Hine, giving us all the opportunity to improve our game! Flemish Farm is back on schedule despite the wet summer and should be coming on line in 2014 with stabling and exercise facilities available to members in 2013. Our Polo Office has organised yet another packed schedule for next year and I am looking forward to welcoming our new Polo Manager, Glen Gilmore back to Smith’s Lawn next April. A former Director on our Board and a playing member for many years, Glen is a true heavyweight in the sport of polo. Glen’s understanding of the game, combined with a great sense of humour, will be much appreciated by all in the office and players alike. Next season will surely be a good one.
