locals by the Guards team as Juan Jose Brane (Cartier), later named La Martina Most Valuable Player, Horacio Etcheverry (Tang), Ramiro Garcia Dagna (Cartier) and Lucas Lujan (Tang) had been at the Beijing club for some four weeks. So their knowledge of China’s many idiosyncrasies proved invaluable. Equus & Co’s Oliver Hipwood was no stranger to Tang Polo Club either. A month earlier he had hosted this event’s media masterclass to introduce the Cartier event to the Chinese media. As polo is a new sport to the modern Chinese audience, Cartier’s Chinese PR team was doubtful as to the success of this masterclass. But Oliver’s passion for the game shone through and every member of the class concluded their visit by both riding a pony and practising their shots on the wooden horse. A rising star of English polo, Jack Richardson found time before heading to Australasia, to play for the Dorchester Collection alongside his father Kim. He showed much poise both on and off the field as he was much in demand with the Chinese media too. He was the perfect ambassador for the sport and mastered the difficulties of having every word translated as he spoke with aplomb. Then, on the eve of his 21st
birthday, he was delighted
to receive a pair of La Martina kneepads when named the Most Valuable Player in the subsidiary final.
