within and around us, leaving us to shine again. They are the warriors who fight our darkest battles with us, not for recognition but purely to win. So in the darkest of times, who would we want to stand beside us but a being who is fearless, strong, determined to win and has no will other than to conquer fear? Some of their names sound like a character list from Lord of the Rings: Astaroth, Orias, Pruflas, and Crocell, but how fitting, I thought, that such a great story of the fight for Good over Evil should be so in line with these forgotten beings. Or did Tolkein know more than he let on? Were these stories and many more like them closer to the truth than we like to think?

I sat with Balam, the angel that flies with the Sparrowhawk, seeing conflict arise, watching and waiting for the moment to strike. He is wild, like the bird, and yet can be a great strategist, giving advice on plans, what action to take if any, and when to act. As he settled to talk to me, a ram sat with him, quietly like the Sphinx. I asked for his help with a matter which had aroused my anger and I did not wish to retaliate out of hurt. He helped me to see the whole issue from another perspective like that of the hawk, an overview. He told me to acknowledge the emotions of anger & hurt, which had come first, who was the anger aimed at – myself or another? We examined the ‘darker ’aspects of my own nature, (what I consider my weaknesses) and also at the ‘darker ’side of the other person.

I saw unexpected traits that helped me to forgive us both.

Like with all angelic beings there was no judgement, Balam showed just a will to overcome the fears that lurked beneath the surface.

In our desire to live in harmony with Mother Nature and to stop destroying our Earth, we find we are fighting big corporations and the ‘money machine’. This battle is perhaps one of our greatest concerns now and all the ‘Love &Light ’in the world is taking a long time to effect the changes we so desperately need. There are those in power who close themselves off from the beauty of our

precious planet and see only profit, but slowly some of them are being shocked awake, through natural disasters and personal experiences. This tactic comes from the warrior spirits of Nature, the Elementals and their Guardians, the Pagan warrior Goddesses who rise with us to say “Enough!”

In many of the world ’s myths and legends, women are revered for the destruction as much as the creation of Life. Strong women, not afraid of change and the chaos that brings, are honoured as being in tune with Mother Nature, willing to make sacrifices in order to create a better life. Throughout history many of these have, and are still being guided by the ‘dark, Goddesses such as Hecate, Goddess of the Dark Moon when all is abandoned just before a time of new creation, the Morrigan, Celtic Queen of death, the afterlife and of battle, with her Raven bird, who was linked to Morgana of Arthurian legend. Kali, the black Hindu Mother Goddess of dissolution and destruction, and Nephthys the Egyptian Goddess of twilight, death and transition, all are with us helping us to break down the old ways of destroying the Earth in order to create a new Life here. Nephthys is sometimes portrayed as a vulture - not the prettiest of birds. The image of vultures circling above the desert is a sure sign that something has died. But do we spare a thought for what they actually do? They pick the carcass clean. Vultures clear up mess. People with a vulture as a power animal are always the ones clearing up and washing up at someone else's party. Know any vultures? Aren't they so helpful, always willing to lend a hand when there's a job to do that no-one else wants to do?

This is an aspect of the transitional phase of our evolution that we are experiencing now; clearing away the old, getting rid of the mess we’ve made in order to rebuild and recreate. Sometimes when we are stuck and can’t seem to make any progress, we need to deal with the rubbish, the aftermath of our own disasters, clear ourselves out so that we can move forward again. Nephthys enables us to look beyond this physical
