THE DARK SIDEOF THE LIGHT by Hilary Stanley
“Beware the Dark Side,Luke,” warns Obi Wan in Star Wars.
But what if he had said: 'Be aware of the Dark Side, Luke'?
‘Beware’ implies something is dangerous, keep away or guard against it, but ‘be aware’ means simply to know, be conscious of, without the warning perhaps? Shouldn't we be aware of our own 'darker side', the darker side of Life, those aspects of ourselves, society, politics, or just life, that we don't like to acknowledge or look too closely at? Or are we still afraid of the dark?
Within the Dark, Light shines the brightest. The Light of Illumination? Enlightenment? What is it we are looking for? I was climbing up a mountain side towards a cave high in the cliff face, it was getting dark and I felt the need for some shelter. I was aware of aching limbs and weariness as I reached the mouth of the cave on a wide ledge. It was pitch black inside yet I felt nothing but relief at having reached it. I sat looking out over a bleak landscape as dark clouds gathered and blocked out the glow of the setting sun, shadows united to become one darkness; Night.
Movement behind me and my spirits lifted, bringing the feeling of a happy reunion with an old friend, a very old friend, an inky blue/black dragon who flies unseen against the night sky. The ground vibrated with his footsteps and the sound of his breath echoed around the walls of the cave. I felt his warmth wrap around me as his dear face came alongside my own and I reached out to touch the smoother scales of his chest. “Shall we fly tonight?” I asked.. “Maybe later,” he replied,,“First we will listen

to the calm stillness of the night, as the darkness spreads and blocks out all illusions we will listen harder, sense and feel more.” We sat in silence for a while allowing my senses to adjust and sharpen, becoming aware of the slightest movement, change in the air, feeling the temperature drop degree by degree; so much that I would not normally notice. Then we talked of Dark Matter that the scientists are so desperate to quantify. He told me that it is the stuff of all other realms and dimensions that exist outside our understanding and that we should simply accept it is there, without having to take it apart and examine it. “Aaaah, tell that to the scientists!” “They will never find t he Truth of what Dark Matter is ”,he said,“for it is not measurable in terms of molecules and atoms,it is the energy of existence.” Yes, we flew that night and my perceptions of life changed. I know that when we give up any fear of ‘the dark’,the ‘dark side’, or ‘dark energies ’and look with discernment and all our senses alert at whatever exists, in the light and in the dark, we will find so much more than we could ever dream of!
I have been asking the Fallen Angels for help too, realising that the term means fallen by the wayside, forgotten, not 'fallen from grace', or 'cast out'. These angels are powerful too, quietly getting the job done without a blaze of
glory or herald of trumpets. They come in the darkest of moments when despair seems overwhelming, they consume the darkness
