ARTICLE The Dorset Diary spiritual insights from an ancient landscape “Preparing for Post-2012 - reconnecting with the land” by Jane Butterworth

Dorset – a land in its own right, although her neighbours of Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire and Hampshire can all claim ancient rights of their own, there is a calling from the Spirit of the land here that is special. Such a message connects us not just to the downs, hills, fields and ancient coastline that is this unspoilt county, but also to the surrounding counties of South West England: an ancient landscape long before Wessex evolved, long before pre-Roman tribes cultivated the land, but to pre-human times when the original weave of subterranean energy knew no boundaries, it just flowed in accordance with the Earthly divine will, nourishing the land wherever it was needed and working with the Elemental beings and devas, maintaining the slowly evolving land-mass that later became Britain.

Here in the South West we can find an abundance of open sites to explore and communicate with, with the resulting re- energising and uplifting healing we will receive in exchange. Connecting with the land brings a sense of calm and strength that no walk on a stretch of concrete could ever create. This is a journey to help you connect with the ancient spiritual energy of the land and it brings a sense of honouring our roots. Whether you are experienced or just waking up to spiritual understanding, all can connect in this way. If you are one of the latter and maybe feel inadequate using your intuitive senses, then what we are talking about is to just sit in a quiet area of your own choosing (be it coast or country) and wait. Close your eyes. Breathe….in and out. Connect gently with the pulse of the Earth. Become one with the soil or rock you are sitting on. Once your Earthly life pursuits and the chattering monkey mind begin to fade from the forefront of your thoughts, let the energy of the land help you melt away such physical tension and allow your own spirit to reconnect, via the very soil you were born from, to the consciousness of our planet – the importance of this, at this spiritually historic point in time, is explained later.

If you wish to continue working spiritually, declare your intent that you come peacefully with an open mind and an open heart. Perhaps make an offering, such as channelling Light or say a prayer for peace and protection for the land, perhaps a personal ritual – whatever you feel inspired to say or do, the spirit of the place will hear you. But the key is to wait to be approached by the spirit world as they are not used to being spoken to! (Only one note of caution, although reluctant to spoil the ambience of this journey: if you decide to ‘open up’ psychically be aware there are those, certain darker Elemental beings, who will relish jumping in or around your personal energy field so, sensibly, psychic protection needs to be called upon. Beginners should keep things simple and call upon their Spirit Guides to help them feel protected from the interfering ones, so that they may connect safely with the land.)

Discover also the joy and wonder of such simple meditations. You will find different counties have different rhythms and different parts of these counties different rhythms again. This is why we feel comfortable in some places and yet not in others and certainly we do not all appreciate the same set of vibrations. A classic example can be found in Wiltshire where the landscape of Avebury feels quite different from the landscape of Stonehenge. At another highly energetic site, that of Glastonbury in Somerset, the energies vary so much and fluctuate so much that different parts of the town can feel entirely different and vary each day! Yet another energetic site is Dorchester in Dorset and, to a lesser degree, there is a similar effect. As well as how you connect, it is your personal resonance which will make a difference to what you experience. As you quietly begin to feel that ancient pulse, simply merge with it and see what journey it takes you on. Experiment, explore and soon
