Shy children may not embrace the camp idea right away, but you might be able to cultivate their interest in attending by alleviating their fears of the unknown.


Health Issues It’s a good idea to discuss camp plans with your health care provider, who can help ad- dress any medical concerns you may have.

Allergies If your child has food sensitivities, seasonal/ outdoor allergies, severe reactions to insect bites and stings, or any other allergy, it is critical to have a plan of attack in case of a reaction. Send any pre- scribed medications such as antihistamines, topical steroid creams or inject- able epinephrine pens for serious reactions. Also, learn about the camp location and food menu to prevent unnecessary exposure. Ask about


sending outside foods if menu accommodations are not possible.


Medications Remember to send all prescription drugs in their original containers with your health care provider’s name and number on the bottle. Often, a special note and clear instructions are required in order for camp employees to administer medications. Dis- cuss the available medical care off ered at the camp. Is there a registered nurse onsite? How far is the nearest hospital and local EMS? You will most likely need to give signed permission for camp staff to take your child to the hospital in an emergency.


Sunscreen/Insect Repellent Sunscreen and insect repellent are a neces- sity for kids at camp. Some camps regard
