3 Use Bikes & Boards Bicycle riding and skateboard- ing are a great form of exercise. Before hitting the streets, review traffi c safety and the importance of wearing helmets (and for skateboarding, pads for elbows, wrists and knees). Encourage refl ective apparel if riding at night.

4 Get a Retro Workout Hula-hooping, playing hopscotch and jumping rope are wonderful, timeless exercises. Hula-hooping pro- vides a fun abdominal workout you can do inside or outside the home. Consider having contests for who can “hula” the longest. T e hula hoop can also be used in relay games and obstacle courses. Encourage your kids to roll or jump through the hula hoop for a fun alternative. Playing hopscotch: Using sidewalk


chalk, draw a hopscotch grid. Use a marker and throw within the fi rst square. T e fi rst player hops on the grid and can land on one foot in single squares and both feet in double squares. If a player steps on the line or outside the grid, she must start over. T e player who success- fully moves the marker through all grid

squares fi rst, wins. Jumping rope gets the heart pumping! Use a short jump rope for individual use, or buy a long jump rope for two or more kids to jump through at one time.


5 Hit the Trail Hiking outdoors as a family is a great way to enjoy the warm weather. Check out your local parks and recreation departments for trails in your community. Scavenger hunts encourage walking and running while


enjoying the season’s natural beauty. Scavenger lists may include fl owers, rocks, bugs, sticks, fossils, frogs — the sky's the limit. Make sure all family members wash their hands when the hunt is over to avoid bringing any “natural germs” inside.


6 Play Golf If you are just starting out, consider spend- ing time on a driving range with a bucket of balls. On the course, walk instead of driving a cart, and encourage kids to use
