Surrounding the stadium and providing the all-important
threshold between the ‘garden party’ atmosphere of the outer podium and the intensity of the seating bowl will be the wrap. This comprises 360 strips of white tensile fabric, each twisting by 90 degrees, which hang down to the podium to allow spectators to pass through. This, says Johnson, will be a lightweight enve- lope to match what is the lightest Olympic Stadium ever built. As to the future, the long-term use of the stadium has been a
thorny subject, flitting between football clubs like West Ham United, Leyton Orient and Tottenham Hotspur, all separately either showing interest, calling their lawyers or both. Rugby and cricket clubs, too, have signalled their interest, along with
the athletics lobby. It will remain in public ownership and retain the athletics track for the 2017 World Athletics Championships. But whatever happens, Johnson is assured that, while the legacy of the stadium will be ultimately decided as late as May this year, studies have shown that the stadium is sufficiently flexible to be able to be transformed into a range of sustainable solutions including cultural and community events. It is, thus, ready to both embrace the temporary and adapt to the long-term, with the extra track record-bolstering achievement of having been built on time in less than three years, and below budget. Great Britain must hope that it is only the first of many gold m edal performances.
