introduce third party accreditation schemes. However, the new Fire Safety Order in 2005 changed this by consolidating legisla- tion. It also placed the onus for a building’s fire safety on a ‘responsible person’ rather than the fire service. The annual fire risk assessment was also established at this stage, with the ‘responsible person’ relating to the person with training and experience to implement required measures. As such, it’s a requirement for the correct door hardware to

Building hardware that fails to perform properly when required could result in fatal consequences. Recent disasters, such as the fire at residential tower block Lakanal House in 2009, claimed six lives. Based on a risk assessment it is imperative that the right prod-

139 FREEDOR JUST GOT EVEN BETTER

Fireco has announced some important improvements to award winning Freedor, the world’s first wireless, electrically powered free-swing door closer. Access has been made smoother by adding an automatic free- swing function, weekly self-test disruption and noise has been reduced by making the weekly test selectable rather than a default function; and the battery life has been extended from 12-18 months to 18-24 months. The component count has been reduced and redun-
