example, on a Sunday morning, when the kids are playing, the mums are happy to stay and watch. “It’s comfortable, pleasant to be in and light and airy with
heating. It’s also a nice place to have a few pints. The other place was cold and damp and dank and had no appeal at all. “I’m delighted it’s been completed to such a high standard
and set the club up for the future. We seem to be attracting more players, both at junior and senior level, and they’re com- ing because they see we’ve got good facilities, our grounds are in good condition, we’ve got very good coaches and there’s suc- cess on and off the field. At the moment we seem to be going from strength to strength and this new clubhouse is a key part of that success,” Bridges concludes. There’s been plenty of interest beyond the local rugby frater-
nity with enquiries from dance and exercise classes, nurseries and playgroups about hiring the clubhouse. Eddie added: “People who’ve been there have been amazed. It’s ideal for parties – nice building, masses of parking and very few neighbours to disturb. It’s already being seen as an asset to the town as a whole.” A recent stand-up comedy night attracted 125 people to the
clubhouse, local pop groups also use it and it could soon become a popular venue in the weddings market too. “It’s got to pay its way, particularly in the rugby close-season between May and September,” said Eddie. Nevertheless, the main use for the building is rugby and
things are certainly going well on the pitch, as well as off it. At the time of publication, Crowborough RFC were enjoying a pretty good season, topping the London Three South East divi- sion with victories that included a 94-0 win over Eastbourne! The official opening of Crowborough RFC’s clubhouse is
planned for Easter 2012 – and will hopefully involve the rugby team from Crowborough’s French twin town Montargis. But, as Eddie Bridges, said: “We might have a few unofficial openings before that!”
