Not only does the boulevard open up a previously isolated
area, but it improves pedestrian access through Ordsall and offers a link between the heritage and the regeneration. “Incorporating service areas for the scale of retail on the site
was a challenge, especially in access for deliveries to the super- market,” says Neal. “Parking for retail, hotel and residential users was also a challenge. A two-storey car park with a lightweight upper deck was seen as the most appropriate solution, to provide easy access to the site’s various elements. With retail and town- houses wrapped around the car park, the finished result is rather discreet and allows the site to be easily secured at night.” Russells Construction MD Andrew Russell says: “The con-
struction of a large retail unit for Morrisons, the car park, smaller retail units, apartments and houses made strong project man- agement vital, to keep on top of a tight schedule of deliveries and works. “I’m pleased with how smoothly the project ran under the
stewardship of our experienced major projects managers. We’ve worked closely with an expert team – the architects, our valued supply chain, LPC Living and Morrisons.”
Gareth Russell, construction director of Russells Construction,
adds: “Careful and organised project management, along with good communication between the design team and the devel- oper, have all contributed to this successful completion.” Alastair Shepherd agrees: “The contractors have done an
excellent job and have been very proactive – particularly consid- ering the tight time scales they have had to work to. We’re delighted with how the project has turned out and there has been some great feedback from the community.”
