New robust passive safety junction marker Leafield Environmental has launched a new safety marker Sentry™ Bollard that it claims can make a positive contribution to traffic safety. Despite routine signposting, road users often have difficulty identifying the junctions of minor roads with rural ‘A’ and ‘B’ roads, especially at night or in poor visibility. This presents a hazard with cars suddenly breaking to make a turn or not slowing sufficiently to allow for obscured
vehicles coming out of the turning. The new Sentry™ bollard has been developed specifically to mark the precise position of these junctions, placing a bollard close to the road either side of the incoming minor road.

Swistherm from Alumasc chosen for iconic college nursery
Alumasc’s Swistherm external wall insulation (EWI) has contributed to the aesthetics and energy efficiency at the new campus of South Cheshire College – one of the most visually exciting educational buildings in the UK. Jefferson Sheard Architects designed a new 26,500m2
curved building based on the concept of a village street, with individual departments
functioning like shop fronts. The curved façade on the nursery section of the building demanded a first class insulation system. Alumasc worked closely with Approved Installer MIB Facades to deliver an appropriate technical solution for the project. Rob Sharrock, director of MIB, comments: “We were appointed to install the EWI on this particular section of the building and immediately recommended the Alumasc Swistherm system using 140mm thick Lamella Board finished in 1.5mm white Silkolitt render. We had total confidence that this system would perform superbly and be straightforward to install onto the cement particle board and SFS substrate. As expected, the system has achieved the required U-value of 0.23W/m2K.” Swistherm is a BBA Approved, fully warranted system that offers an excellent solution for contemporary and new build applications such as South Cheshire College. It is a lightweight, thin coat insulated render system which, when used with Lamella mineral wool insulation board, is particularly suited to curved features. It can be wrapped and shaped around radiused areas, enabling the installer to rasp and shape the render finish to a very high standard. Swistherm can also be used with Expanded Polystyrene or Cork Insulation for a naturally sustainable solution. For a robust, weather resistant finish, a range of Silicone or Mineral renders are available.

Water-based intumescent gives long term protection Nullifire’s new S708 moisture resistant water- borne intumescent coating for 60 minutes has proved the ideal fire protection solution for a new steel-frame £9 million multi-storey car park at the Gloucester Royal Hospital. On this proj- ect, where the perimeter steelwork is semi- exposed, a durable moisture-resistant product was required. Cardiff-based specialist third party accredited installer R Lewis and Co therefore
selected Nullifire’s S708 intumescent coating for this project, with two coats of Nullifire TS815 top seal to finish. Although only the perimeter steels occupy a semi-exposed position, R Lewis chose to use S708 throughout the car park. The perimeter steels were then finished with two coats of Nullifire’s TS815 top seal in grey, while the internal steels were given a coat of TS815 in white. All prod- ucts were spray-applied on site.
