Triton offers a RIBA approved seminar on green/living roofs that focuses on their installation, benefits, the design principles, construction processes and further considerations. If you would like to book this seminar (or one of Triton’s other CPD seminars on structural waterproofing in existing or new build base- ments) please complete the form at
www.tritonsystems.co.uk/cpd.php. Triton supplies two water storage/drainage membranes for use in the construction of green roofs. New Platon DE40 is designed for installation where high capacity water storage is required. With a water storage volume of 10 l/m2
and a stud
height of 40 mm, it is capable of storing large volumes of water and discharging it over a period of time. The linked chambers ensure the optimal distribution of water and nutrients. On extensive green roofs it allows the use of plants with a low level of resistance to dry periods and extends the intervals between necessary watering. Platon DE 40 is supplied in sheets of 1.29 x 2.23 m and is quick and easy to install. The individual sheets are overlapped by one row of studs, and covered by a filter fabric so the soil does not obstruct the water storage or drainage layers. Soil is spread out over the filter fabric, and the veg- etation can then be planted. More information about Triton’s green roof sys- tems can be round at

enq. 112 Can CPD plug the BIM skills gap?
of Building believe that up-to-date Continuing Professional Development can alleviate skills gaps in the industry. “Professional bodies have long
7
been the ambassadors for continu- ing professional development. It’s what sets a professional qualification apart from an academic one and cer- tainly within our membership there is a real appetite and culture of CPD. It could be argued that the role of CPD has been undervalued. But if we look at topics like the rise of Building Information Modelling com- bined with the shortfall of industry training funds then it might well be left to CPD providers to plug the skills gap,” commented Michael Brown, deputy chief executive at the CIOB. The survey taken by more than
1,500 respondents took the indus- try’s temperature on current CPD provision. Eight out of ten felt that CPD was an important, very impor- tant or essential ingredient for their career development, with 46 per cent seeing an improvement in their own performance as a result of CPD. 44 per cent felt that CPD had
9 per cent of construction professionals responding to a survey by the Chartered Institute
improved their ability to cope with change. In the last twelve months 30 per cent of respondents believed taking part in CPD had improved their own employability. With 49 per cent suggesting that their employers had remained committed to provide and/ or support CPD during 2011. 80 per cent felt that CPD can
improve the technical knowledge of construction graduates, bridging the gap between academic qualifications and work ready skills. When respondents were asked
whether they valued CPD at the same level as the previous year (2010), 70 per cent regarded it of the same importance (important/very important/essential), with a further 17 per cent suggesting it had become more important. “From what we see in this survey
there is an increasing trend towards online CPD provision rather than the more traditional formal training methods.
...The convenience of dis- tance learning is an attractive propo- sition. What we have to be mindful of... is that the CPD on offer is actu- ally valuable and relevant and not just a money making machine,” added Michael Brown.

SIG Design & Technology’s RIBA approved ‘Designing & Enabling the Roof to Work Harder’ provides guid- ance on how to maximise the fifth elevation. It covers sustainable water- proofing, insulation, green roofing, carbon capture, energy generation, creating amenity space, providing for biodiversity and harvesting rainwater etc. The CPD focuses on correct roof design and how to install innovative products while retaining the integrity of the waterproofing and refers to BS & Codes of Practice. It covers built- up/modular green roofs, increasing efficiency of PV energy capture using solar reflective membranes and key points on the HSE’s Working at Height.
