Pillar Talk
Health and Safety Solutions Bob Norman
Health and safety is at the heart of everything Solutions does: it is morally right to expect all staff to go home as healthy as when they arrived, and we all pull together to achieve this.
Our targets for injuries and utility strikes are all set at zero, to clearly identify our commitment that all accidents and incidents are avoidable. This is the message we share with all our delivery partners throughout the entire project lifecycle.
Last April, in partnership with Scottish Water CID, we rolled out our Safety Observation Reporting (SOR) system for recording both positive and negative safety behaviour. Our new system has been found to be a useful tool and the number of SORs being submitted has risen to over 600 a month. If you see something unsafe or want to share a positive safety experience, please raise a SOR and send it to the “Solutions SOR” mailbox.

January 19th 2012 saw Solutions and CID’s Health and Safety teams, plus 200 front line supervisors from our delivery teams, heading to Perth Concert Hall for a joint Health and Safety Conference.
Geoff Aitkenhead opened the event which featured presentations from a variety of groups including the Tayside Police Road Safety Unit, the Civil Engineering Contractor’s Association (CECA) and several of our delivery partners.
The highlight of the day was certainly the presentation given by Ken Woodward – Ken was blinded by an industrial accident which involved chemicals and his presentation was certainly thought provoking. The key message to all was to stay focused on doing everything safely always.
