Recommendations

Better Patient and Applicant Demographic Tracking

The National Institute of Medicine (IOM) has recommended that healthcare organizations develop methods to more accurately track patient demographic information through measures of race, ethnicity, language preference, and ability. Furthermore, the IOM recommended that healthcare organizations periodically disseminate this information to their employees, patients, and community.

Then in early 2009, at the request of the Area Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the IOM formed the Subcommittee on Standardized Collection of Race/Ethnicity Data for Healthcare Quality Improvement. The Subcommittee first examined approaches to data standardization, and then recom- mended the collection of more specific categories of ethnicity, called "granular ethnicity" based on one's ancentry, as well as language needs and the already existing Office of Management and Budget (OMB) measures of race and Hispanic ethnicity.

So far Mountain Park has tracked the demographics of applicants through Careerbuilder.com and the demographics of employees through the ADP Human Resources system. Now based on the recom- mendations of the IOM, and the findings of the Subcommittee, Mountain Park is committed to creating a better tracking system on race, language, and ethnic information for our patient population as well.
