2012 The Western Rider Development Programme … For the 21st century rider!
Western riding is gaining in popularity, but it’s sometimes a challenge to access good quality instruction close to home. In October 2011 a unique, exciting and very accessible new online training facility was launched for western riders throughout the UK, and even overseas.
Endorsed by the UK’s Western Equestrian Society (www.
wes-uk.com) the Western Rider Development Programme is designed to help riders gain access to instruction no matter where they live. Built around the website www.westerntrainingonline.
co.uk it offers comprehensive and progressive training using western techniques, including detailed ‘How To’ guides. Riders who register on the programme are able to submit videos as a basis for individual feedback and advice from a Western Equestrian Society (WES) Instructor and Judge, who is also a BHSII (reg) and UKCC
Level 3 Coach. This is backed up with exclusive access to a growing library of video clips on the Programme’s YouTube channel. All of this combines to help riders to understand the philosophy and schooling behind achieving a soft, light and willing western trained riding horse.
Programme riders are able to proceed at their own pace and are assessed through a series of seven levels. Level 1 looks at the foundation of correct training both in hand and during basic ridden exercises. As riders move through the levels they are asked to perform manoeuvres such as turns on the forehand and haunches, lead changes, travers, roll backs, spins, neck reining as well as developing the correct western paces of jog and lope. Following every successful assessment riders receive a certificate, and their achievements are highlighted in the Society’s national magazine.

it’s fun!
