It’s all go at Sheepgate... Indoor Dressage
On the coldest day to date this winter, many riders braved the elements to compete in Sheepgate’s December indoor dressage show. With winners receiving Christmas sashes and special rosettes and mince pies all round there was plenty of festive cheer!

Lily Payne had a convincing first and second in the intro class on her long time partner Jananda King of Hearts and was delighted to have secured qualification for the Equestrian Life qualifier. The prelim class offered two sections with three winners, Lynn Fry and her striking young coloured horse Peter, Laura Bennet and Salik and Richard Skelt and Meerlust Lady all gaining 68.18%. Suzi White and Montenagro were clear winners in the other section on 70%. Further ties for first place in the novice between previously consistent winner Maria Watson and Cynfos Magical Mercury and Rachel Holden and Martel. Well done to all riders who braved the low
British Dressage
Local riders benefitted from two days of affiliated dressage with an enjoyable time all round. The prelim classes were hotly contested with a win for local judge Michele Codd and her lovely mare, Woodcroft Rosenrot. Gaining 67.8%, Michele is a regular at Sheepgate with this combination being trained under the watchful eye of Sarah Payne at Sheepgate. The open section was won by Alice Elliott and her lovely new young horse, Brabant V. Alice spends a lot of her time judging and took time out to test the water for this horse’s first show since she has owned him and was delighted to score 70%. Sheepgate Ushipower’s triumphant return to the dressage arena continued with a total of seven wins during the last month to secure his qualification for the elementary and medium British Dressage winter regionals with scores of up to 78%. Sheepgate’s Sarah Payne is absolutely over-the-moon with the way this horse is going, taking every day as it comes she adds, ‘Anything more he offers is an absolute bonus.’
Meanwhile, hot on Ushi’s heels is Sarah’s relatively new horse Sheepgate Bommel who, at only five years old and in his first year of competition, is proving to be a very exciting prospect, securing two wins at novice level to gain his qualification for the winter regionals at novice level recently. win with 67%. Sunday’s prelims gave two convincing wins to Helen Hampson and her own Mansion House Margaret.
Katy Hurst and TK’s Toyboy headed the elementary qualifier with 67% while local rider Sarah Stainton and her coloured pony, Sir Caffrey, enjoyed a return to the dressage arena after time off to gain the highest percentage of the show on 69%.
A delighted Kathy Young and Eastfield Aristocrat were absolutely thrilled to gain their highest ever score in a grand prix to win on 65%. Sheepgate training is paying off for Alastair Gibbs and Wilfret who were delighted with a double win in Sunday’s elementary classes. Full results
