Melissa Harvey’s Year
I bought Milo (Reinartz F) about 2 years ago now as I had outgrown my 14hh pony, Milo has taught me so much over the past 2 years and he will certainly have a home with us for life!
I am 21 years old and work full time as a secretary so fitting in the horses is hard work especially as we don’t have an arena to work in or any fences to practise over! Previous to Milo I had only ever done local show jumping classes at around 70cm as showing and working hunter was my thing so going in for our first BS Newcomers class at 1.10m was fairly nerve wracking, I did come back to mum after walking the course and informed her “I’m going to die! “
Milo is now 13, he is by Gibraleon and branded with the Rhinelander breed mark, we are just starting out in our show jumping career together, this being our second competitive year in BS. We began getting to know each other by beginning our season with trailblazers which is where we knew he had a talent and loved jumping the bigger fences so we affiliated him to BS and went to try our first show, we came out with a two fences down but I was just thrilled to get round!
Since then we have progressed and qualified for the Ken Beeston Final at Hargate EC last year , we also qualified for the Amateur 2nd round classes and carried on
learning together. Over the winter we decided to have a break from competing and concentrated on training to become more of a team and to improve our style and accuracy with the brilliant help of Caroline Moore at Vale View.
Over the summer we competed together successfully mainly concentrating on the Amateur series to complete our qualification for the National Amateur finals at Aintree in November. In our first attempt at the 2nd rounds we qualified at Field House EC in 3rd place in a huge class of over 50 competitors, I was thrilled and it meant we were now on our way to Aintree! At this show he also gained his qualification for the 2nd rounds 2012 at his first attempt!
We did lots practise for the finals and after weeks of preparation they eventually came around, we set off on the 2 ½ hour drive to Liverpool (although a missed turning made it more like 3 ½ ! ) and arrived just before 11pm , after unloading and bedding down we didn’t make it to bed until 1.30am and I was up at 6am as I was drawn 2nd in his first class of the day so we were both very tired! Unfortunately throughout the show he was unplaced in the finals, but with over 115 people each of his classes I didn’t expect to be, we were just happy to have made it and to have had the experience!
Milo also competes regularly in 42

British Dressage and recently finished 8th in the Petplan Area festivals at Vale View in a hotly contested class, with help from my mum as trainer we hope to qualify for the BD summer regionals at Elementary in 2012
Looking forwards to next year with show jumping we will be
competing in the Blue Chip qualifiers and Scope qualifiers and also hopefully completing our qualification for the 2012 finals at Aintree.
I am looking forward to a fantastic 2012 and would like to thank everyone that made 2011 a great year!
